In writing our last blog about resolutions (shameless plug!) there was one thought that kept cropping up. Although we support and feel that it is important to set goals in all four of our foundational pillars (Functional Training, Holistic Nutrition, Nature, and Self-Care), we can’t help but feel that every kind of goal set, at its root, is self-care.

Goal setting is an amazing self-care practice. Goals, first and foremost, provide you with a direction. They give you something to aim for and work toward guiding you to where you ultimately want to be in life. This gives you a clear focus on what is truly important to you. Now, self-care isn’t always easy. And determining what matters to you deep down, what you really vibe with energetically or what makes you happy isn’t always easy either.

One of the hardest parts of self-care is often reflection because it involves asking the tough questions. How are you really doing? How do you want to improve? What can you start (or stop) doing to be better?

But aren’t those the same questions we ask ourselves when setting goals?

Your goals don’t have to be big, sweeping changes. They can be but for any giant goals, it’s a good idea to break them down into smaller bite-sized goals that will take you step-by-step closer to your big goal. With big goals, it’s easy to get caught up in the sheer magnitude, get overwhelmed and then, let go when you either can’t keep yourself motivated or you feel discouraged that you’re not making the progress you’d like- when you sometimes don’t even know what that progress looks like!

When it comes to setting goals that are self-care focused, it can be the small things that matter. So many people think that self-care is selfish but that couldn’t be further from the truth! Caring for yourself is an antidote to stress, builds resilience so you can better deal with challenges, and allows you to have the energy and capacity to also care for others.

One study showed that 40% of people polled feel they rarely have time for themselves each day. You know from our EPIC Life Formula that we recommend 40 minutes of self-care EVERY. DAY! Need somewhere to start? Here are some self-care resolutions that will make a big difference:

Rethink your social media habits

It’s no secret that social media can have negative side effects. If you’re following people or accounts that don’t make you feel empowered, strong, capable and instead make you feel insecure, small or inadequate … STOP. There are so many accounts that are focused on sharing positivity, inspiration, and encouragement (shameless plug, again!). Why not freshen up your feed with accounts that help to motivate you and make you smile!

Start Budgeting

One of the most common and most debilitating stressor for many of us is money. Tracking your spending, breaking it down into a budget, making an appointment with your Financial Advisor are all self-care steps since they make the rest of your life easier. There are plenty of apps that help you create and manage a budget and loads of financial planning books that can help to educate you on being smart with your spending.

Give Back

Spreading kindness and helping others is still self-care! You know that warm and fuzzy feeling you get after making someone else smile? Let’s do more of whatever it is that makes you feel that. You can volunteer for your favourite organizations, donate where you can to support causes you feel strongly about or just be a reliable shoulder for someone in your field or community. These actions sometimes feel small but when they are done with heart they make you (and those around you!) better.

Prioritize Sleep

The previous night’s sleep really is the biggest influence on how your day starts … and continues. It affects literally every physical and mental function you have. Yet, adequate sleep is a big pain point for so many of us. Setting a proper sleep schedule, trying essential oils in your bedtime routine, and putting away electronics are all good places to start ensuring you get at least 7-9 hours of sleep each night. If you’re still struggling to get some good shut-eye, we have a few more suggestions, too!

The path might not always linear but that is a-ok! The journey is just as important as the destination. It takes time to form habits or to get used to even small changes in your lifestyle but whatever your goals are, it’s important to remember to be kind to yourself! You might have days where you slip up. You might have days where you get down and feel discouraged. Self-care has layers to it and you need to try to be kind to yourself while your being kind to yourself- you feel us?

For the bad days (and the good!), you always will have this community to lift you up and remind you how AMAZING you are. Ready to get started? Just reach out to set up your complimentary EPIC Life Assessment!
