One of the main reasons why people first walk through our doors- or the doors to any gym for that matter. They want to lose weight. What most people don’t realize off the bat however is that losing weight and burning fat is more than just logging hours in the gym. And with the EPIC philosophy, we’re here to improve aaaall aspects of your life. We’re here to help you live a more balanced and healthy life which means you will, first and foremost, feel better.

That doesn’t negate the fact that too much of the really bad fat on your body isn’t healthy. That’s right, not all fat is created equal. Visceral fat is what we are most concerned with. This is the internal fat that develops in the abdominal cavity and gets stored around the organs. This can contribute to the development of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and other ailments. It’s sneaky because it might not be easy to see- but that’s what we’re here for!

In our EPIC Life Assessment, we use the InBody Analysis which allows us to determine if there is any visceral fat hiding. This is how we help you burn it and release it.

Functional Training

Haven’t yet heard of HIIT? This stands for high-intensity interval training. We actually would recommend this training for any of your health goals but especially for burning fat. It is the most impactful physical effort you can make in attaining fat loss, improved heart rate and metabolism, endurance boost, and muscle gain.

For fat loss in particular, we want our bodies to use a process called Oxidative energy system which is a fancy way of saying that we want the body to break down fat into energy. This process can only occur if there is oxygen in the system which is where HIIT comes in. The high-intensity, go-go-go period essentially creates an oxygen shortage making your body ask for more of it during the recovery period. This Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC) helps to burn more fat and build more muscle in a shorter span of time than any other form of steady exercise.

Holistic Nutrition

This should actually be the first adjustment you make. Get rid of the fire that is fuelling the enemy. Lower your carb intake, sugar and sodium (bad table salt) intake, focus your nutrition on more nutrient-dense, plant-based and healthy fat foods. How you fuel your body plays a major part in performance. And if you continuously fill it with dead foods, how can you expect to feel alive? Also, a BIG ONE - stop eating when you’re stressed. Eating when cortisol is up not only messes with your digestive juices making digestion tougher on the body but we store more of the bad fat when we are in a heightened state.

Something in that last paragraph might sound counterintuitive. Healthy fat foods? Well, remember- not all fats are created equal! Healthy fats from foods like coconut oil, fish, avocado, nuts, and seeds are actually beneficial in burning fat. It’s foods that are high in trans fat that you need to really watch out for and eliminate from your diet.

Ok, this may sound woo woo to you, but open your mind. What are you metaphorically “not letting go of” in your life? The physical weight you are caring, I bet, will closely resemble other more invisible weight you are carrying around. Are you the caregiver, the hero archetype, always out to do things for everyone and save the day? Are you struggling with self-acceptance, self-love or find yourself at the end of the day only with scraps for yourself? Getting the weight off our physical body means first being aware of the invisible pressure we put on ourselves, the areas where we are not speaking or behaving in truth and where we are not loving ourselves.

One of the best ways to flip the script on this is exposure to Nature. Nature is loving, nature washes over our eyes, delights our hearts, and allows us to see things for how they really are. It gives us time to connect and drop into what is true. How much of our lives is spent pretending - pretending you are ok, pretending things are working with your relationship with yourself, your kids, YOU? Getting rid of the deep visceral fat means having the courage to face the literal dark stuff you are holding onto. Get into Nature to tap into what’s going on and what needs to be taken off your plate - either by relieving the pressure you put on yourself or saying “no” to things that are not serving you.

Reducing your stress levels is an important part of burning fat. Stress can actually make you gain belly fat as the stress hormone, more formally known as cortisol, triggers your appetite- which doesn’t mean that you’re actually hungry- and can boost abdominal fat storage.

How do we combat? Meditation, yoga, taking some time for YOU. It’s critical to practice self-care for balanced living but who knew it would actually help you lose weight? (Not to brag … but we knew.)

Ensuring you are getting enough sleep is also an important part of healthy living and, believe it or not, burning that visceral fat. Studies show that there is a link between sleep loss and weight gain or obesity as a lack of sleep can result in metabolic changes, increase cortisol levels, decrease glucose tolerance, and increase hunger or appetite.

See what we mean? There’s more to burning fat than trying to lift heavy things and sweat it off (but that’s another story entirely). If you’re ready to get started or if you’re not really sure where to start, you can book your EPIC Life Assessment and we can help you get moving in the right direction.
