As a part of #theEPIClife, we feel it is absolutely critical to have a connection with nature. To begin with, there are countless benefits to walking. While our nature pillar isn’t immediately obvious in the benefits it can offer along your wellness journey but let me tell you- the payoff is HUGE. Even simply looking at pictures of nature is proven to reduce anger, stress and anxiety. Mentally, physically, and even spiritually- good things come when we spend time in the great outdoors … that’s why they’re “great!” ;)

Increase Happiness
As mentioned, nature can do wonders for your mental health. Scientific studies have shown that connecting to nature, however, that may be (through hiking, camping, gardening, feeding birds, etc.), has a significant, positive effect on people’s health and happiness. In fact, one study showed that the number of people reporting their health as “excellent” increased by 30% when they changed the way they connect to nature. This adds to the increasing amounts of evidence that connecting to our natural world has a direct positive impact on our cognitive world.

Improves Sleep
With such busy daily lives, it’s not uncommon for our sleep patterns to get out of whack. Even if you don’t necessarily feel sleepy, your body can be giving you other signs you might not recognize to tell you you’re tired (like headaches dizziness, and moodiness). Spending more time connecting to nature can actually help to reset our biological clocks to a more natural sleep cycle. Compounded with reduced stress and anxiety, getting a full 8 hours of rest is that much easier.

Boosts Immunity
Being outdoors is a natural immune booster thanks to the increased exposure to Vitamin D (hello, sunshine!). The reduction in stress again, aids here (-it so often comes back to that). Scientists are continuing to look into the correlation between stress and immunity function and have found that SO many common illnesses like an upset stomach, hives, and even heart disease are linked to the effects of emotional stress.

Get Inspired
This is the benefit that matters most to me. There is so much to see and be inspired by in nature. When there are no distractions around, you get a sense of wonder, feel spiritually aligned, you are grounded, you are in the MOMENT. That WOW feeling and sense of awe is certainly something you can expect from nature. We explained how the word “inspiration” literally means “in spirit”. Connecting to nature doesn’t only have to mean getting outside (although we definitely encourage that!) but being open to inspiration.

The best thing about connecting to nature is how easy it is. It can cost ZERO DOLLARS! Open a window, explore your community- just get outside! This is the simplest fix that can make a big difference in your health.

We aim to hit the outdoors for as many community events as possible- yes, even in the winter. It is a tried and true method of boosting spirits and when we get together as a group it is that much more enjoyable. Join us for a walk on Wednesdays or keep an eye out for our upcoming community hikes. We’d love to share our love of nature with you!
